1. When did you move to Portland? I discovered Oregon in 1986 when I attended the University of Oregon. I graduated with a B.S. degree in Marketing and Statistics in 1990. I then moved back to the Bay Area and almost immediately decided to move to Portland in 1991.

2. What do you love about Portland? I love the fresh air, the green, the nature, and people.

3. What made you decide to start Zartisa? I have always wanted to work for myself and own my own business. So, after about ten years of searching for the right business, I discovered the beauty industry. I found a beauty school in Portland and in 2007 received my license in, “Nail and Esthetician.” I worked for a few years in the industry for various salons then decided to go back to beauty school and get my license in “Hair Design.” I was very intimidated to get my hair license, but once I got into the hair design field, I fell in love with it. After all this, I found out that my grandfather was a famous barber back in Vietnam. I didn’t know I had it in me.

4. What do you most enjoy about running a beauty salon? I enjoy hosting events for my clients (i.e. girls night out, birthdays, group parties, etc.). Pampering people and seeing smiles on my client’s face, says to me, “I have done my job.”

5. What’s been your favorite experience in building your business so far? Meeting new people, building clientele, networking, getting involved with the community, and cross marketing with local businesses.

6. If you could only give people one piece of advice for skin care, what would it be? Cleanse your face every day and keep it hydrated.

10. How is having a business in the Hawthorne? Very interesting. I find that people in this area are very eco-friendly, health cautious and supportive of their local community/businesses.

11. What restaurants and cafes are your favorite in the area? I love the Cup and Saucer Restaurant, and the La Petite Provence Bakery.

12. Where were you born? In Vietnam.
